What SGPA Do You Need to Reach Your Target CGPA?
Work out the SGPA you need for your target CGPA, see why one good semester moves it less each year, and plan the semesters you have left.

To find the SGPA you need, compare the grade points you have now with the points your target needs. With a CGPA of 7.5 after 4 semesters, reaching 8.0 next semester takes a perfect 10. Spread over the 4 semesters left in an 8-semester degree, it takes an average of 8.5.
That gap between "impossible in one go" and "doable over time" is the most useful thing to know when you plan your grades.
The formula
This assumes every semester has the same number of credits, which is when your CGPA is a simple average of your SGPAs.
SGPA YOU NEED
(target CGPA × (semesters done + semesters left) − current CGPA × semesters done) ÷ semesters left
"Semesters left" is how many semesters you're planning over: just the next one, or all the rest. If the answer is above 10, you can't reach the target in that time.
CGPA 7.5 after 4 semesters, aiming for 8.0
- Points so far: 7.5 × 4 = 30.
- Points 8.0 needs after semester 5: 8.0 × 5 = 40. So semester 5 needs an SGPA of 40 − 30 = 10.
- Over all 4 semesters left: 8.0 × 8 = 64 points needed, so (64 − 30) ÷ 4 = 8.5 a semester.
The same target gets harder the longer you wait
Here's what it takes to get from a CGPA of 7.5 to 8.0 in an 8-semester degree, depending on when you start:
| Semesters done | SGPA needed next semester | Average SGPA needed over the rest |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 9.0 | 8.17 |
| 4 | 10.0 | 8.5 |
| 6 | 11.0 (not possible) | 9.5 |
After 2 semesters, an 8.17 average gets you there. After 6, even two strong semesters of 9.5 are only just enough. If you want to raise your CGPA, the best time to start is now.
Why each semester moves your CGPA less
Your CGPA is an average of every semester so far. Early on there are only a few semesters in it, so a new one makes a big difference. Later, each new semester is a smaller share of the total.
Here's what one strong semester does to a CGPA of 7.0:
| Semesters done | CGPA after an SGPA of 10 | CGPA after an SGPA of 9 |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 8.5 | 8.0 |
| 2 | 8.0 | 7.67 |
| 4 | 7.6 | 7.4 |
| 6 | 7.43 | 7.29 |
| 7 | 7.38 | 7.25 |
A perfect semester in year 1 lifts your CGPA by 1.5 points. In the final year, it lifts it by less than 0.4. It's the same maths that makes your safe bunks change over the semester: the bigger the total, the less one more piece moves it.
The good news: a bad semester hurts less later, too
This works both ways. Say your CGPA is 8.0 and you have a rough semester with an SGPA of 6.0:
- After 2 semesters, it drops to 7.33.
- After 6 semesters, it only drops to 7.71.
So a strong start protects you. And if you've already had a bad semester early on, you still have the most semesters left to make up for it.
If your semesters have different credits
When credits vary between semesters, use credits in place of semesters in the formula. Your marksheet lists the credits for each semester.
SGPA YOU NEED, WITH CREDITS
(target CGPA × (credits done + next semester's credits) − current CGPA × credits done) ÷ next semester's credits
For example, with a CGPA of 7.8 over 88 credits and 22 credits next semester, reaching 8.0 takes (8.0 × 110 − 7.8 × 88) ÷ 22 = 8.8.
Plan the semesters you have left
- 1Find your current CGPA. If you only have your semester results, the CGPA calculator works it out from your SGPAs.
- 2Use the formula to see what your target needs next semester and over the rest of your degree.
- 3If the next-semester number is above 10, aim for the average over the rest instead, or pick a closer target.
- 4Turn the SGPA into grades: try different grade combinations for your subjects until you hit the number you need.
- 5Recheck after every result. Your target gets easier or harder with each semester.
Start with your real numbers in the CGPA calculator. Then use the SGPA calculator to see which grades would get you the SGPA you need, for example how much one subject moving from a B+ to an A changes it.
Frequently asked questions
What SGPA do I need to raise my CGPA from 7 to 8?
It depends on how many semesters you've done. After 2 semesters at 7.0, you'd need a perfect 10 next semester to reach 8.0. Spread over the 6 semesters left in an 8-semester degree, you need an average of about 8.34.
Can one good semester raise my CGPA a lot?
Early on, yes. Later, much less. With a CGPA of 7.0 after 1 semester, an SGPA of 10 takes you to 8.5. After 7 semesters, the same 10 only takes you to 7.38.
Does one bad semester ruin my CGPA?
Less than you might think, especially later on. With a CGPA of 8.0 after 6 semesters, an SGPA of 6.0 brings it down to 7.71. The same semester after just 2 semesters would bring it down to 7.33.
