HOW IT WORKS

How SGPA is converted to a percentage

There's no single national formula. Each university decides how an SGPA converts to a percentage, and three formulas are the most common.

AICTE FORMULA (MOST COMMON)

Percentage = (SGPA − 0.75) × 10

Example: an SGPA of 8.5

  1. AICTE formula: (8.5 − 0.75) × 10 = 77.5%.
  2. × 9.5 formula: 8.5 × 9.5 = 80.75%.
  3. × 10 formula: 8.5 × 10 = 85%.

SGPA to percentage table

The same SGPA can give quite different percentages depending on the formula, so always use your university's.

Which formula should you use?

Check the back of your grade card or your university's academic regulations, which usually state the conversion. If there isn't one, the AICTE formula is the usual choice for engineering and technical courses.

FAQ

Conversion questions, answered

How do I convert SGPA to a percentage?

Use the formula your university specifies. The most common one for Indian technical courses is the AICTE formula: percentage = (SGPA − 0.75) × 10. For example, an SGPA of 8.5 gives (8.5 − 0.75) × 10 = 77.5%.

Which formula should I use?

The one your university states, which is often printed on the back of your grade card or in its academic regulations. If your university doesn't give one, the AICTE formula is the usual choice for engineering and other technical courses.

Where does the × 9.5 formula come from?

CBSE uses × 9.5 to give an indicative percentage, and some universities apply the same multiplier to SGPA. For example, an SGPA of 8.5 × 9.5 gives 80.75%.

How do I convert my CGPA instead?
