HOW IT WORKS

How CGPA is converted to a percentage

There's no single national formula. Each university decides how a CGPA converts to a percentage, and three formulas are the most common.

AICTE FORMULA (MOST COMMON)

Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10

Example: a CGPA of 8.2

  1. AICTE formula: (8.2 − 0.75) × 10 = 74.5%.
  2. × 9.5 formula: 8.2 × 9.5 = 77.9%.
  3. × 10 formula: 8.2 × 10 = 82%.

CGPA to percentage table

The same CGPA can give quite different percentages depending on the formula, so always use your university's.

Which formula should you use?

Check the back of your grade card or your university's academic regulations, which usually state the conversion. If there isn't one, the AICTE formula is the usual choice for engineering and technical courses.

FAQ

Conversion questions, answered

How do I convert CGPA to a percentage?

Use the formula your university specifies. The most common one for Indian technical courses is the AICTE formula: percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. For example, a CGPA of 8.2 gives (8.2 − 0.75) × 10 = 74.5%.

Which formula should I use?

The one your university states, which is often printed on the back of your grade card or in its academic regulations. If your university doesn't give one, the AICTE formula is the usual choice for engineering and other technical courses.

Where does the × 9.5 formula come from?

CBSE uses CGPA × 9.5 to give an indicative percentage, and some universities use the same multiplier. For example, a CGPA of 8.2 × 9.5 gives 77.9%.

What should I put on a resume or job application?

Use your university's conversion if it has one, and give your CGPA alongside the percentage so there's no confusion about which formula you used.
