HOW IT WORKS
CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) combines all your semesters so far. Most universities weight each semester by its credits, so a semester with more credits counts for more.
FORMULA
CGPA = Σ (SGPA × semester credits) ÷ Σ semester credits
Example: two semesters
A simple average of the same two SGPAs gives (8.0 + 9.0) ÷ 2 = 8.5, slightly lower than the weighted 8.52, because the stronger semester had more credits. If every semester has the same credits, both methods give the same answer. If not, use the credits for an accurate CGPA.
Many universities use the AICTE formula, (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, so a CGPA of 8.52 is about 77.7%. Others multiply by 9.5. Use the formula your university states.
Each semester's grade card usually shows your SGPA and the total credits for that semester. Add the credits for every semester you've completed.
FAQ
Multiply each semester's SGPA by its credits, add those up, then divide by the total credits across all semesters. For example, semester 1 with an SGPA of 8.0 over 20 credits and semester 2 with 9.0 over 22 credits give (160 + 198) ÷ 42 = 8.52.
Not always. If every semester has the same number of credits, a simple average of your SGPAs gives the same answer. If credits differ between semesters, enter them for a credit-weighted CGPA, which is what most universities use.
It depends on your university. Many follow the AICTE formula, percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, which is what this calculator shows. Others multiply by 9.5. Check your university's rules or the back of your marksheet.
SGPA is your grade point average for one semester. CGPA is your cumulative average across every semester so far, so it changes each time a new semester's results come out.
The averaging works on any scale, but this calculator is set up for the 10-point scale used by most Indian universities, so SGPAs above 10 aren't accepted and the percentage conversion only applies to the 10-point scale.
