HOW IT WORKS
Every class you skip adds one to the total held but nothing to the classes you attended, so your percentage drops. The calculator finds the most classes you can miss while staying at or above your target, or, if you're already below it, how many you need to attend in a row to get back.
IF YOU'RE ABOVE YOUR TARGET
Classes you can skip = (attended × 100 − target × total held) ÷ target, rounded down
Example: 42 of 50 classes, 75% target
IF YOU'RE BELOW YOUR TARGET
Classes to attend = (target × total held − attended × 100) ÷ (100 − target), rounded up
Example: 30 of 50 classes, 75% target
A missed class adds to the total only, but an attended class adds to both numbers, so it moves your percentage up more slowly than a skip moves it down. At a 75% target, each class you miss takes about three attended classes to make up for.
Attendance is usually counted up to a cut-off date, and extra or cancelled classes can change the totals. Keeping a class or two in hand protects you from surprises, and your college's records are always the final word.
FAQ
It works out how many more classes you can miss while keeping your attendance (classes attended ÷ total classes held) at or above your target. For example, at 42 of 50 classes (84%) with a 75% target, you can skip 6 classes: 42 ÷ 56 is exactly 75%.
If you're below your target, the calculator shows how many classes you need to attend in a row, without missing any. Each class you attend adds one to both numbers. For example, at 30 of 50 classes (60%), you need to attend the next 30: 60 ÷ 80 is 75%.
The calculator only uses the numbers you enter. Your college's official records decide whether you can sit exams, and some colleges count labs, tutorials or each subject separately. Keep a buffer of a class or two, and check your college's attendance policy.
